One person was killed in a shooting following a dispute at an apartment complex in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday, with police clarifying that the incident was not an attack on a nearby mosque.
The clarification came after the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) initially reported that its agents were responding to a shooting at a mosque in the city.
Columbus Police Sergeant James Fuqua told reporters that the shooting stemmed from an unresolved dispute involving several people at an apartment complex.

Fuqua stressed that the incident was unrelated to an attack on the religious site, urging the public not to draw premature conclusions.Â
He also confirmed that one person had died from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
“This was not an attack on the mosque,” James Fuqua told reporters.

“There are multiple individuals in an apartment complex with some unknown dispute,” he said.
“We don’t want to rush to judgment, but it’s super important that I make it clear that this shooting had nothing to do with an attack on the mosque itself.”
The ATF’s Columbus office had earlier announced that agents were responding to reports of gunfire at a mosque.

In a subsequent statement, an agency spokeswoman said preliminary information indicated that people attending a funeral were leaving Alrahma Mosque when an undetermined number of individuals reportedly opened fire.
The agency confirmed that one person had died in the incident.
Gun violence remains a recurring problem in the United States, where private gun ownership is legal.
