Nigeria’s electoral commission says it is investigating suspected AI-generated photographs found in the preliminary voter register published on its website, acknowledging possible technical or procedural lapses.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stated that the online register, uploaded on October 26, was the same preliminary document physically displayed nationwide from October 9 to 15.
The commission noted it had already flagged questionable records during the physical exercise.
“During the physical display, a number of questionable registration records were identified and flagged for further examination,” said Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement on Tuesday.
“The Commission commenced the process of reviewing these records and taking appropriate corrective action in accordance with established procedures.”

INEC clarified that the online publication did not reflect all ongoing data-cleanup activities, stressing that the register is not yet final.
The commission said the display exercise is specifically designed to allow the public to scrutinise records and enable corrections before the final certification.
“The Commission is also examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings,” the statement added.

INEC commended citizens for their vigilance, stating that public scrutiny contributes to the integrity of the register.
“The Commission appreciates the vigilance of citizens and stakeholders who have brought these concerns to public attention. Such scrutiny contributes to the process of improving the accuracy and integrity of the register,” the statement said.
The commission assured that confirmed irregularities will be addressed, with the final voter register scheduled for certification on December 15, 2026.
