French forward Kylian Mbappe put a tumultuous week behind him on Sunday by scoring early to set Real Madrid on course for a 3-0 victory at Racing Santander.
Mbappe converted an 11th-minute penalty after going down under pressure from Matteo Prati.
He entered the match following a turbulent week, having narrowly missed out on the Ballon d’Or to Harry Kane before issuing a formal apology for comments regarding former Chinese leader Mao Zedong that prompted Chinese state television to pull La Liga broadcasts.
Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande added goals to secure Madrid’s sixth consecutive victory across all competitions.

Arda Guler set up Bellingham to roll home his 50th goal for the club, while Diomande later struck from the edge of the box to seal the result.
Racing Santander created chances early in the second half, but a VAR review overturned a penalty awarded for an Aurelien Tchouameni handball, keeping the hosts from mounting a comeback and handing them their first home defeat of the season.
The win keeps third-place Real Madrid within three points of league leaders Barcelona, who defeated Alaves 6-1 on Saturday, and one point behind second-place Atletico Madrid.
