Ethiopian authorities indefinitely suspended the media licence of an independent newspaper, The Reporter, on Monday, claiming the outlet published content that contradicts national interests.
The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) announced the ban on Facebook, accusing the publication of disseminating biased information that harms foreign investment, tourism, and diplomacy.
The order halts all print, digital, and broadcast operations until the outlet satisfies legal and ethical conditions set by regulators.
The crackdown on The Reporter, one of Ethiopia’s few remaining independent outlets publishing in both English and Amharic, marks the latest escalation in state pressure against press freedom.

This suspension follows the revocation of Addis Standard’s licence in February and the expulsion of a French newspaper correspondent in June.
Reporters Without Borders, which ranks Ethiopia 148th out of 180 countries for press freedom, notes that five journalists remain detained nationwide, with four facing terrorism charges.
