Iran has displayed a massive billboard in Tehran threatening to kill US President Donald Trump, marking a new escalation in the anti-American messages seen across the capital.

The billboard, placed above the busy Enghelab Square on Tuesday, showed Trump behind bars, head bowed. It carried the words: “We will kill Trump”.

Since the war began on February 28, following US-Israeli strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, authorities have repeatedly displayed billboards and banners mocking Trump and calling for revenge.

However, the latest displays come as diplomatic efforts have renewed to bring Tehran and Washington to the negotiating table. The talks aim to prevent another round of fighting, which has spread across the region and pushed up global prices.

Trump has said a deal with Iran “could happen”. His comments came as the United States prepared for crucial midterm elections on Tuesday, with voter dissatisfaction partly linked to the war.

Meanwhile, another display at Tajrish Square in northern Tehran featured paintings mocking the US president. One painting showed Trump lying on the ground with a bloodied face as a foot pressed down on his head. Another showed a bomb covering his face, in an apparent reference to Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte’s 1964 painting, The Son of Man.

A life-sized replica of a prison cell also remained on display nearby. An actor dressed as Trump spent the day inside the cell, while a screen beside it showed images of damage caused by US strikes on Iran.

Tehran has accused Trump of deliberately targeting civilian locations during the war, including a school and a wedding ceremony. Iranian authorities say the attacks killed dozens of people, including women and children.

State-sponsored billboards and murals have been common in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The displays often honour allies, celebrate military figures and send political messages to countries viewed as adversaries, particularly the United States and Israel.
