Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated three-term incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in Tuesday’s midterm elections, delivering a stunning triumph for her party in Texas.
Networks CNN and NBC News called the race in Hinojosa’s favour after she built a broad coalition of independents and voters frustrated by rising gas prices, inflation, and President Donald Trump’s Middle East policy.
In a post on X following her victory, Hinojosa declared, “There will be no special set of rules for the wealthy and the powerful. The trust you have placed in me tonight is not a blank check. It is a sacred responsibility.”
Tonight, I make a solemn promise to every single Texan. Whether you voted for me or Governor Abbott, or felt so betrayed by a broken politics that you did not vote at all.
Hear what Texas said today, loud and clear: Your government belongs to you. And as your governor, I will never forget it. There will be no special set of rules for the wealthy and powerful. No looking the other way when someone in my own party does wrong.
The trust you have placed in me tonight is not a blank check. It is a sacred responsibility. And I intend to earn it every single day.

The 52-year-old attorney and state lawmaker centred her campaign on pocketbook issues and promised to halt construction on new data centres to protect local communities from tech expansion.
Abbott, 68, conceded the race on Tuesday night as shifting state demographics helped end his bid for a fourth term.
President Trump quickly criticised the defeated governor on Truth Social, claiming Abbott had “become a RINO” and asserting that “it wasn’t pretty.”
Hinojosa’s victory anchored a broader Democratic surge across the Lone Star State, where Democrat James Talarico also won a high-stakes U.S. Senate seat.
Talarico overcame active campaigning by Trump, who had held multiple rallies to rally the Republican base in Texas.
