Democratic candidates achieved historic victories across the United States on Tuesday, delivering landmark leadership firsts while signalling a broad voter rejection of President Donald Trump’s second term.

Bill Shiebler, chief strategy officer at the civic engagement network State Voices, called the night “a huge rebuke against hate and division” and noted that voters increasingly see themselves reflected in their elected leaders.

In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson to become the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history, ending more than two decades of Republican rule in the state.

New Hampshire voters elected Representative Chris Pappas as the first openly gay male U.S. senator, while New Mexico elected former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, as the first Native American female governor.

Statewide breakthroughs extended further as Gina Hinojosa became Texas’s first Latina governor.

In Michigan, leftist candidate Abdul El-Sayed campaigned on universal healthcare in a tight race to become the first Muslim U.S. senator.

Additionally, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is positioned to become the first Black Speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes in January.
