Suspected thugs have damaged several vehicles in the campaign convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Calabar, Cross River State.
The attack occurred on Wednesday, hours before Obi was scheduled to address a town hall meeting in the city.
According to reports, assailants smashed the windscreens and side mirrors of campaign buses.
A viral video of the incident showed individuals dressed in black shirts and face coverings using machetes to damage the vehicles, causing panic among passersby and traders.
Esther Umoh, a media aide to Obi, raised the alarm on X, stating, “Thugs are trying to attack our convoy.”
She subsequently posted a video showing a person with a gunshot wound to the leg being evacuated, which she attributed to a stray bullet.

Addressing the attack during the town hall meeting, Obi recounted that his security team advised him to divert after the assailants reportedly armed themselves.
“They were throwing stones, and I saw people running back. And my security people said we should find another way because they have machetes and other things,” Obi said.
“I asked, ‘In Nigeria? I am coming down to go and meet them.’ By the time they saw what was happening, they left.”

He attributed the incident to a culture of tolerance for political aggression. “All these things happened because Nigerians allow it. We are not going to allow it in 2027,” he stated.
Obi arrived in Calabar alongside his wife, Margaret, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The incident follows a similar security challenge in Benue State about two months ago, where his convoy was blocked by youths on the Makurdi-Gboko Federal Highway. Police later arrested 46 suspects in connection with that blockade.
