The Ogun State Government has asked residents to save its emergency ambulance hotline, 08112000033, for free medical assistance during road accidents and other emergencies.

It also announced that accident victims transported through the service would receive free medical treatment for the first 48 hours at designated government health facilities.

The announcement was made in a public awareness message posted on the state government’s social media platforms on Saturday.

Residents were encouraged to save the number and share it with family members and friends.

The government explained that contacting the state’s dedicated line could provide a faster response than relying solely on the national emergency number, 112, as calls to the national line may first require assessment and transfer to the relevant state emergency agency.

It said the additional process could delay assistance, especially when responders need accurate information about the caller’s location.

According to the government, calling Ogun’s ambulance service directly could help minimise communication delays and connect callers with local emergency teams more quickly, pending the implementation of an advanced location-based emergency call-routing system across Nigeria.

“Until Nigeria fully implements an advanced, location-based emergency call-routing system, contacting Ogun State’s ambulance service directly can help reduce communication delays and connect callers with local responders more quickly,” the message stated.

The state stressed that prompt contact with emergency responders was essential, urging residents to circulate the hotline because early intervention could save lives.

The announcement followed a road accident at Saapade on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which drew attention to emergency response arrangements in the state.

Nollywood actor Kunle Afod had raised concerns over the response time in a video posted on Instagram, claiming he waited for about 20 minutes at the accident scene without seeing an ambulance.

He appealed to the government and emergency agencies to provide assistance.

The Ogun State Government, however, challenged his account, maintaining that an ambulance and personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene 10 minutes after the accident was reported.
