Belgian club, Standard Liege have appointed former Senegal international, Mbaye Leye as head coach.
Leye, a 7-cap former Teranga Lion represented Zulte Waregem, Gent and Lokeren and Mouscron in the Belgian league.
A striker during his playing days, the 38-year old began his coaching career at Liege where he worked as an assistant before his upgrade.
“Standard Liege and our former player and assistant coach Mbaye Leye reached an agreement: the Senegalese became the head coach of our team one era to the end of the 2020-2021 season.” the club said in an official statement.
Leye is one of few African coaches in Europe and is the second African to coach in the Belgian top division after Hany Ramzy, an Egyptian, coached Lierse in 2012.
A few months ago, former Nigerian international goalkeeper, Ndubuisi Egbo won the Albanian League with FK Tirana. Egbo, who has since been sacked became the first African to win a league title on European soil after the success.
