With Ethiopia stoic and unrelenting in its plans to fill its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the Ugandan military has reached an agreement on providing security intelligence for the Egyptian government.
The agreement was reached late Wednesday night amid heightened tensions over the dam which is built on a tributary of the Nile River.
The Uganda People’s Defence Force said its Chieftaincy for Military Intelligence signed the agreement with the Egyptian Intelligence Department.
The UPDF quoted the Egyptian Military chief as saying that whatever affects Egypt will ultimately affect Uganda, as security experts warn against the embers of war the involved nations are fanning.
The Egyptian Intelligence Chief, Maj. Gen Sameh Saber El-Degwi remarked that the fact that Uganda and Egypt share the Nile makes cooperation between the two countries inevitable because what affects Ugandans will in one way or other affect Egypt.
Abdelfatah El-Sisi, Egypt’s President has warned against the possible conflicts that may arise from the current disagreement.
Ethiopia’s 70bn-cubic metre dam sits on the Blue Nile, one of the tributaries of the River Nile which begins from Uganda. The dam is expected to improve the power generation of the country and also help its economy.
The agreement between Egypt and Uganda, who have previously shown discontent with the former’s control of hydropower generation through the Blue Nile, will be for intelligence sharing.
