Adeola, Obasanjo Clash Over Campaign Expenses

The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate for the 2027 Ogun State election, Senator Solomon Adeola, and former APC governorship aspirant, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, have exchanged accusations over claims that she sought reimbursement for expenses incurred during her governorship campaign.

Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, alleged that Obasanjo left the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party after he declined to refund her campaign expenses.

Speaking during a meeting with market leaders in Remoland, the senator described the alleged request as inappropriate, claiming it suggested her political ambition was driven by personal financial interests rather than public service.

He further alleged that Obasanjo defected to the PDP after failing to secure what she wanted from the APC and maintained that her actions reflected a desire to benefit from public resources.

Adeola also addressed the legal challenge against his emergence as the APC governorship candidate, insisting that his opponents lacked the legal standing to contest the election because of their defections from the party. He further claimed the PDP was facing internal legal disputes that could affect its political standing.

Responding, Obasanjo denied personally demanding a refund, describing Adeola as dishonest and lacking integrity.

She explained that members of her political team had presented three requests during discussions with the senator: support for a Senate ticket, reimbursement of campaign expenses and the inclusion of her supporters in his campaign structure.

According to Obasanjo, Adeola neither responded to the requests nor fulfilled any of them before she left the APC. She also claimed he later attempted to persuade her to remain in the party by offering her money.

Obasanjo, who has since emerged as the PDP’s Ogun Central senatorial candidate for the 2027 election, maintained that she left the APC because of alleged rejection, lack of respect and dissatisfaction with the party’s consensus process, which produced Adeola as its governorship candidate.
