A woman has allegedly escaped a possible kidnapping in Kempton Park, Gauteng, while concerns grow after South African police discovered the bodies of several women in the area.
News Central reports that the alleged attempted kidnapping happened on Sunday night. The woman managed to escape and is currently at the Kempton Park Police Station, where she has given a statement to authorities.
Her escape comes as Gauteng Police investigate the discovery of a fifth woman’s body in Olifantsfontein, about 20 minutes from where four other women were found dead in Kempton Park and surrounding areas over the past two months.
The body of 38-year-old runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo was positively identified by her family at the Germiston mortuary on Monday.
Her identification has added to growing concern among residents following the discovery of the other women’s bodies in the Kempton Park area.
The cases have spread panic and outrage, with members of the public questioning why police did not inform them after the first victim was found.
Meanwhile, South African police have urged women in and around Kempton Park to avoid walking or exercising alone in isolated areas and, where possible, travel in groups.
A dedicated multidisciplinary task team has been established to investigate the recent murders and determine whether there are possible links between the cases.
