A mob of about 50 people beat a foreign national to death on Thursday in central Durban, South Africa, according to police reports.
The fatal attack occurred on the sidelines of a demonstration in the city centre, though authorities have not yet confirmed the purpose of the march.
Police stated that two men initially approached the victim, a man in his late 30s or early 40s who was standing by the roadside, before the larger group joined in the assault.

Paramedics declared the man dead at the scene, while officials continue to investigate his nationality and the motive behind the killing.
Durban remains a primary epicentre for anti-migrant tensions, following months of escalating unrest and xenophobic demonstrations.

Just two weeks ago, authorities deployed soldiers to central Durban to quell two days of severe rioting and looting that targeted foreign nationals.

During that outbreak, rioters torched 14 vehicles and ransacked numerous local businesses.
The recent violence mirrors widespread protests from earlier this year, which forced tens of thousands of African immigrants to flee their homes across the country.
On Wednesday, drivers with e-hailing services marched through the same area alongside the March and March movement, an organisation that has organised protests against undocumented migrants nationwide for several months.
