Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described his team’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton on Saturday as a “big lesson,” marking the defending Premier League champions’ first loss of the season.
Brighton dominated the match at the Amex Stadium from the opening whistle, dismantling Arsenal’s defence with first-half long-range strikes from Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas.
Early in the second half, Chema Andres headed in a third goal from a corner, handing the Gunners their first defeat by more than two goals in over three years.
Arteta conceded that Brighton fully deserved the victory after outplaying his side across every department.
“Extremely disappointed. First of all, I think we have to congratulate Brighton for the victory; I think they deserve it,” Arteta stated. “From our side there were certain basics that you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League, that we were very far from.”
The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak across all competitions for Arsenal, who had entered the season as clear title favourites following their championship triumph last year.
Reflecting on the setback ahead of the three-week international break, Arteta emphasised that the result serves as a crucial wake-up call for the squad’s title defence.
“It’s a big lesson for us,” he noted, while acknowledging the team’s strong start since returning from the World Cup.
“With 18 players coming back, what we’ve done and the way we’ve competed and the number of games we’ve won have been remarkable. But this is a big lesson for all of us to understand what it takes to win at this level.”
