Barcelona secured a major transfer on Friday by signing winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth up to 80 million euros ($93 million).

The Catalan club confirmed in a brief statement that the 25-year-old England international committed to a five-year contract running until June 30, 2031.

Gordon arrives in Spain fresh off a stellar season where he topped Newcastle’s scoring charts with 17 goals, including an impressive 10-goal haul in the Champions League.

The winger’s arrival injects youth into a Barcelona frontline facing significant changes.

The club is losing veteran Polish striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract, and Marcus Rashford may also depart following the conclusion of his loan spell from Manchester United.

However, a newly reopened Camp Nou stadium and three years of disciplined spending have granted the La Liga champions extra financial breathing room under league fair play rules.

This financial flexibility, aided by the departing salaries of Lewandowski and potentially Rashford, allows Barca to target further reinforcements like Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez or even attempt to retain Rashford permanently.

For Newcastle United, the deal represents the second-largest sale in club history, trailing only Alexander Isak’s £125 million move to Liverpool last summer.

The Magpies are already scouting Real Betis winger Ez Abde as a potential replacement.

Meanwhile, Gordon’s former club, Everton, stand to benefit significantly from the transfer; they negotiated a 15 per cent sell-on clause on any profits when they originally sold the winger to Newcastle for £45 million back in 2023.
