Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned Sunday that unregulated artificial intelligence creates an escalating danger, predicting a surge in AI-driven cyberattacks over the next year.

Speaking on ABC News, Gates explained that while the threat of superintelligent AI escaping human control remains years away, cybercriminals using safeguard-free models present an immediate, critical vulnerability.

Gates urged governments to implement strict regulations rather than relying on self-policing by tech companies, dismissing President Donald Trump’s suggestion that corporate self-regulation provides adequate protection.

He highlighted that removing safety barriers from advanced AI models enables bad actors to execute cyberattacks and explore bioterrorism.

Gates emphasised that society must act rapidly to establish real safeguards, as current corporate controls fail to mitigate the growing threat.
