Cologne secured a 2-1 derby victory over local rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday, pinning Gladbach to the bottom of the Bundesliga in a match marred by fan violence.
Riot police surrounded the away section after Gladbach supporters launched fireworks into home seating following Said El Mala’s winning goal.
The disruption suspended play for several minutes, prompting Gladbach sporting director Rouwen Schroeder to condemn the behaviour and announce an immediate club investigation.
Isak Bergmann Johannesson put Cologne ahead early with a spectacular side-footed volley into the top corner.
Gladbach answered just before halftime when US international Joe Scally headed in an equaliser and celebrated in front of the home fans.

Despite new head coach Alexander Blessin taking charge, Gladbach suffered their fifth consecutive defeat, remaining completely pointless this season.
El Mala sealed the victory for Cologne in the 66th minute by cutting inside at the edge of the box and drilling the ball into the bottom corner.
Cologne withstood late pressure following the restart to secure their second win of the season, lifting them into mid-table while leaving Gladbach in crisis.
