Grammy-winning Nigerian music star Burna Boy has paid tribute to his grandfather, Benson Idonije, describing him as a man to whom he would remain forever grateful.

The singer made the remarks during a grand celebration held in Lagos to mark Idonije’s 90th birthday.

The event brought together family members, friends, music industry figures and admirers to honour the veteran broadcaster, music critic and former manager of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

More than a birthday celebration, the gathering served as a recognition of Pa Idonije’s immense contributions to the development and promotion of Nigerian music over several decades.

Guests arrived in colourful fashion for the red-carpet event, but beyond the glamour was a celebration of a man whose influence has connected generations of Nigerian music.

Idonije played a significant role in documenting and promoting the country’s music scene and is widely respected for his close association with Fela during Afrobeat’s formative years.

For many attendees, the occasion highlighted the remarkable musical heritage linking Fela’s revolutionary sound to Burna Boy’s global success.

As one of Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists, Burna Boy’s tribute reflected the profound influence his grandfather has had on his life and career.

The celebration also underscored the enduring legacy of Idonije, whose contributions to broadcasting, music criticism and artist development continue to resonate within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Standing at the intersection of Afrobeat’s past and present, the nonagenarian was honoured as a key figure in a musical lineage that stretches from Fela’s pioneering era to Burna Boy’s international acclaim.
