British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said FIFA President Gianni Infantino is “the wrong man” to lead world football’s governing body over plans to sell stakes in the organisation’s competitions to private investors.
Burnham described the proposal as “an outrageous suggestion” as opposition to the plan continues to grow.
“The idea that it could even be brought forward shows that, in my view, that (Infantino) is the wrong man to lead the organisation,” Burnham said on Friday.
The comments came after Burnham first spoke out against Infantino’s proposal earlier in the week.
The Everton supporter had written on social media that “football does not belong to investors”.
“It belongs to the people who fill the stands and who stand on the touchline week in, week out, rain or shine,” he added.
FIFA recently proposed creating a commercial subsidiary that would manage the business operations of the World Cup and other major events, allowing private investors to acquire stakes.
The plan has faced opposition from several football stakeholders, including European football’s governing body UEFA, which warned that the sport should not be controlled by investors focused mainly on financial returns.
FIFA has defended the proposal, saying it would involve an open consultation process and could generate billions of dollars to support the growth of the sport.
