Cameroonian President Paul Biya signed decrees on Friday authorising two major loan agreements totalling over €559 million to upgrade key regional trade infrastructure.

Under the first decree, the government secured a €347.5 million ($390.9 million) loan from the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development to fund the Douala-Bangui Economic Corridor.

This strategic project seeks to enhance transport and commerce linking Cameroon’s commercial hub, Douala, with the Central African Republic’s capital, Bangui.

A second decree empowered the economy minister to finalise a €212.35 million ($238.87 million) agreement with the Islamic Development Bank to rehabilitate the critical Douala-Bafoussam highway.

The fresh credit lines follow an August decree permitting the finance minister to raise to 930 billion CFA francs ($1.67 billion) through domestic and foreign borrowing.

As Central Africa’s largest economy, Cameroon is accelerating its loan acquisition strategy to cover budget deficits and modernise vital infrastructure across its oil, cocoa, and timber corridors.
