The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says the political crisis in Rivers State denied Governor Siminalayi Fubara the opportunity to seek a second term.
Speaking during his monthly media chat on Tuesday, Wike said he repeatedly warned Fubara against abandoning the political structure that brought him to power, urging him to build on existing achievements instead of dismantling them.
The former Rivers governor recalled inheriting an administration with limited resources, noting that he renovated the Government House and provided official vehicles before leaving office.
Wike alleged that politicians who initially opposed Fubara’s emergence later became his close allies and encouraged him to confront his political benefactors, a move he said ultimately harmed the governor’s political future.
“You wanted to go for a second term, but you are not going,” Wike said, insisting he had nothing to lose from the prolonged dispute.
He also claimed attempts to reconcile both camps failed because of political calculations and alleged that external interests sought to control Rivers State for financial gain.
The political feud between Wike and Fubara, which began shortly after the governor assumed office in 2023, escalated into a prolonged crisis that reshaped the state’s political landscape and ended Fubara’s re-election bid.
