Customs Intercept ₦362Million Smuggled Goods

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adamawa and Taraba Area Command, has intercepted smuggled goods worth more than ₦362 million during intelligence-led operations across the two states.

Briefing journalists in Yola on Wednesday, the Area Controller, Mohammed Tako, said the seizures included 220 kilogrammes of pangolin scales, 74 kilogrammes of ivory tusks, 25,295 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), nine kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, 64 raw donkey skins and 534.55 kilogrammes of dried donkey meat.

The command also seized three vehicles comprising a DAF low-bed truck, a Sanny motor grader and a Toyota Hiace bus, while five suspects were arrested and are currently under investigation.

Tako said the interceptions were made at different locations between June and July during coordinated operations targeting fuel smuggling, illegal wildlife trafficking and other cross-border crimes.

He explained that the operations were conducted in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, the Common External Tariff and international conventions protecting endangered wildlife.

The controller warned that smuggling petroleum products, wildlife species and illicit drugs undermines national security, public health and economic stability.

He added that the suspects would be prosecuted, while the seized donkey skins would be destroyed in collaboration with relevant government agencies in accordance with the law.
