Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested 32 suspected cultists and recovered firearms, ammunition and illicit drugs in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He said police operatives stormed a suspected cult initiation ground in Agbarho in the early hours of Tuesday following intelligence that members of the Eiye Confraternity, allegedly linked to recent cult-related killings in Agbor, were planning further attacks and the initiation of new members.

“Upon arrival at the location, the operatives came under gunfire from some of the suspects. The police team responded professionally, during which two of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries,” Edafe said.

The operation led to the arrest of 25 suspected cultists, while several others escaped.

Police also recovered a pump-action shotgun and a cut-to-size firearm from the scene.

Edafe added that two injured suspects are currently receiving medical treatment, while investigations are ongoing.

In a separate operation conducted on June 14, operatives of the Command Anti-Cult Unit raided a suspected criminal hideout in Azagba-Ogwashi and arrested seven suspected cultists.

Edafe identified the suspects as Obore Ndubrisi, 26; Okafor Okene, 25; Odinigie Sunday, 26; Okohur Destiny, 21; Felix Abraham, 25; Aputa Israel, 27; and Okolie Chinonso Peter, 24.

Items recovered from the suspects included a double-barrel gun, two live cartridges, quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and Tramadol, as well as a walkie-talkie.

“The suspects and exhibits are currently in police custody while profiling and further investigations are ongoing,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the operatives for their professionalism and bravery during the operations.

He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating cultism, violent crime and other forms of criminality across the state.
