The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has assured travellers and Nigerians that it has strengthened safety measures at international airports across the country to curb the spread of the Ebola virus.
FAAN, in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, and released on Wednesday, said it is collaborating with Port Health Services, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and other relevant agencies to intensify surveillance and monitoring of passengers, particularly those arriving from high-risk regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
“Passengers are being screened for symptoms associated with Ebola, and any suspected case will be promptly isolated and subjected to secondary health checks in line with established national and international health protocols,” the statement read in part.
“Additionally, FAAN has strengthened coordination with relevant stakeholders, enhanced staff sensitisation, and reinforced emergency response procedures to ensure swift action where necessary. While there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, FAAN remains vigilant and fully committed to safeguarding public health and maintaining safe airport operations.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday declared the Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a global health emergency, following an outbreak in the DRC that has led to the death of over 130 people and more than 500 suspected cases.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared the virus a continental health emergency on Tuesday. An American doctor tested positive for the virus while working with a medical missionary group in the DRC.
Following the outbreak, the United States introduced new health measures at airports, including enhanced passenger screening. The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), however, said on Sunday that there are no confirmed Ebola cases in Nigeria.
FAAN, however, urged passengers to remain calm, comply with health screening procedures, and report any symptoms to health officials.
