The Director General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Dr Loretta Ogboro-Okor, urged Nigerians abroad to unite and push for the implementation of diaspora voting during News Central TV’s town hall in New York.
Speaking on Saturday at the event themed “Diaspora Voting: Promises, Politics and The Path Forward,” Ogboro-Okor emphasised that securing voting rights depends on citizen commitment rather than political emotion, stressing that “Nigerians who live and study abroad are still citizens of Nigeria.”
Examining the “promises” aspect of the theme, the envoy commended recent legislative steps, highlighting that the current administration signed the diaspora amendment bill into law in February 2026.
However, turning to the complex “politics” surrounding the issue, she acknowledged that crucial questions persist regarding voter eligibility criteria, residency standards, election scope, and overall public trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mapping out “the path forward,” Ogboro-Okor called on the diaspora community to eliminate internal divisions and adopt a shared purpose.
“We must therefore begin to work on that thing that divides us and begin to focus on what unites us,” she stated, emphasising that “a unified Nigeria and a greater Nigeria are more important than one of us.”

She urged citizens to use the new legal framework as a catalyst to intensify advocacy and lobbying efforts.
