Two passenger trains collided in the Al-Ayyat area south of Cairo on Sunday, killing at least four people and injuring 88 others.

Egypt’s railway authority reported that a train bound for Fayoum slammed into the rear of an Aswan-bound service, derailing several carriages and crumpling one train’s engine into a tangle of steel.

Emergency responders used heavy cranes to clear the wreckage and transport victims to nearby Giza hospitals.

The fatal crash occurred at the site of Egypt’s worst-ever rail disaster—a 2002 train fire that claimed over 370 lives—underscoring persistent safety issues across the country’s ageing rail network despite recent billions spent on national transit infrastructure.
