Billionaire entrepreneur and X owner Elon Musk reopened the debate over social media platforms on Thursday after posting a blunt assessment of Instagram.

Replying to a user who announced they had deleted the app and described it as “an inherently female app” with “zero benefit,” Musk simply wrote, “Instagram is for girls.”

The short post quickly gained significant traction, drawing hundreds of thousands of views, tens of thousands of likes, and thousands of replies and quotes within hours.

The remark echoes a similar statement Musk made in May 2026.

At that time, he replied to a viral thread discussing social media habits and “phases of life” with “Lmao. Instagram is for girls,” later adding a follow-up about men who share their Instagram profiles with him.

Musk has long positioned X as a platform focused on open discussion and information, frequently contrasting it with image-driven services owned by Meta.

Instagram, known for photos, stories, Reels, and visual self-presentation, has a large female user base according to various demographic reports, though both platforms attract users of all genders.

Reactions on X have been mixed. Some users agreed with the characterisation or joked about platform differences, while others criticised the comment as reinforcing stereotypes or dismissing the cultural influence of visual social media.
