The National Emergency Management Agency has delivered relief materials worth millions of naira to families affected by severe flash floods in parts of Ebonyi State.
The intervention followed a devastating flash flood on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, which swept through several communities in Ivo and Ohaozara Local Government Areas.
The disaster submerged large areas of farmland, destroyed houses and displaced dozens of households.
Receiving the federal delegation at the Government House in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, expressed concern over the recurring floods in the state and commended the agency for its response.
“The incessant cases of flood disasters across our communities remain deeply devastating to our people and local economy,” Nwifuru stated.
“We commend NEMA for its rapid response and intervention to alleviate the plight of our citizens during this critical period.”
The relief package handed over to the state government included bags of rice, beans and garri, as well as cartons of vegetable oil.

Non-food items included foam mattresses, insecticide-treated mosquito nets and women’s clothing for families displaced by the disaster.
Speaking on behalf of the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, the agency’s Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman, said the intervention was aimed at providing immediate support to affected households.
“Our presence here today represents an immediate enforcement intervention structured to bring direct relief to affected households,” Usman noted.
“We have provided a combination of household and non-household essentials to ensure that displaced victims receive immediate life-saving support.”
The Ebonyi State Government also pledged to ensure that the materials reached the affected families.
The Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Monitoring, Ann Aligwe, said the government would maintain strict oversight of the distribution exercise to prevent diversion.
“The state government will maintain full transparency throughout the distribution exercise,” Aligwe stated.
“We are putting measures in place to ensure that these items reach the genuine victims who have been directly impacted by the disaster.”
The relief intervention came as emergency conditions remained critical in parts of the state.
Earlier on Wednesday, residents of Amaegbu Akaeze in Ivo Local Government Area faced renewed flooding after another surge submerged residential areas.
The flooding forced families to flee their homes with young children and whatever belongings they could salvage.
State emergency monitoring teams remained deployed in vulnerable locations to assess rising water levels and monitor the situation.
