The Enugu State Government has denied reports circulating on social media alleging that residents were attacked in Awgu Local Government Area, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Malachy Agbo, said no such incident occurred in Awgu or any other part of the state.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he accused those behind the report of fabricating the story to misinform the public and create unnecessary panic, insisting that residents across the state were going about their daily activities without any security incident of the nature being reported.
“We wish to state unequivocally that no such incident occurred. The report is fake, baseless, and exists only in the imagination of those peddling it,” he said.
Agbo urged members of the public to disregard the claims and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of causing fear and confusion.

The commissioner said the administration of Governor Peter Mbah has continued to prioritise security, noting that the government has invested heavily in measures aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.
He further alleged that individuals uncomfortable with the prevailing peace and stability in Enugu were responsible for spreading false information in an attempt to score political points at the expense of the state’s reputation.
“The administration of Gov. Peter Mbah has made security a top priority and continues to invest heavily in measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property across the state.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals, apparently uncomfortable with the prevailing peace, security, and stability in Enugu State, would resort to fabricating falsehoods.
“They engage falsehood in a desperate attempt to score cheap political points at the expense of Ndi Enugu and the state’s hard-earned reputation as one of the safest destinations in the country,”he said.
Agbo warned that anyone found to be deliberately creating or disseminating fake news would face legal consequences.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding residents and urged the public to rely on credible and verified sources for information relating to security matters.
