EU Summons Burkina Faso Envoy Over Diplomats Expulsions

The European Union (EU) summoned Burkina Faso’s ambassador on Thursday to strongly protest the “unjustified” expulsion of two European diplomats.

EU spokeswoman Anitta Hipper announced the move online, noting that the West African nation did not explain the expulsions.

She warned that the EU will implement retaliatory measures in response to the decision.

This diplomatic dispute follows Burkina Faso’s decision in June to sever ties with its former colonial ruler, France, which prompted Paris to withdraw all of its diplomats this month.

Junta chief Captain Ibrahim Traore has consistently pursued anti-Western policies since seizing power in 2022, while his government actively represses critical voices.

Tensions between the two sides had already escalated last month when Burkinabe authorities summoned the EU ambassador.

That dispute arose after a European Parliament resolution and comments by a French politician criticised the junta’s failure to defeat terrorists operating in the country.
