Former Commissioner for Works in Ondo State and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Forum in the state, Chief Erastus Akeju, has died at the age of 88 after a brief illness.
His passing was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the facilitator of the Ondo APC Elders Forum, Demola Ijabiyi.
Senator Olajide Ipinsagba, who represents Ondo North Senatorial District, described the late Akeju as a respected statesman whose life was defined by public service and integrity.
According to him, Akeju made notable contributions to Ondo State’s development, particularly during his time as Commissioner for Works.
Ipinsagba said he received the news of Akeju’s death with deep sorrow, noting that his passing was a major loss to his family, the Akoko North West community, Ondo North Senatorial District and the state at large.
He added that the late politician distinguished himself through what he described as purposeful leadership during his tenure as chairman of Akoko North-West Local Government Area, saying his record remained a reference point for responsive governance.

“It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the passing of Chief Elder Erastus Akeju, a distinguished statesman, community leader, and elder whose life was dedicated to service, integrity, and the advancement of his people.
“His passing is a significant loss not only to the Akeju family but also to the people of Akoko North West Local Government, Ondo North Senatorial District, and Ondo State as a whole. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, associates, and all those who mourn this painful loss,” he said.
“His tenure remains a benchmark for responsive and people-oriented governance,” he added.
Akeju had earlier served as local government chairman before being appointed Commissioner for Works under the administration of the late Governor Adebayo Adefarati.
He later emerged as chairman of the APC Elders Forum in Ondo State, where he was involved in mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Ijabiyi also mourned the deceased, describing him as a stabilising voice within the party and a mentor to younger political actors.
He said Akeju consistently promoted unity, moderation and development throughout his public life, adding that his death represents a significant loss to the APC and the broader political community.
