The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, to warn political parties, candidates, and supporters against violence ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan appealed on Sunday, September 27, 2026, during a visit to the Emir’s Palace in Zaria, Kaduna State. The visit formed part of the commission’s nationwide tour to assess election readiness.
Amupitan urged the traditional ruler to discourage young people from engaging in political thuggery, emphasising that citizens should view elections as peaceful choices rather than violent contests.
He encouraged residents of the Zazzau Emirate to collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the upcoming polls. Amupitan noted that engaging traditional leaders strengthens stakeholder participation and improves overall electoral preparedness.
The INEC chairman announced that the commission will conduct the Presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027, followed by the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027.
He explained that INEC is currently upgrading its administrative, technological, and logistical systems across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Furthermore, Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to neutrality, fairness, and transparency.

In response, the Emir of Zazzau praised INEC for sharing timely updates regarding the 2027 polls. However, he urged the commission to resolve recurring issues from past elections, such as delayed material distribution and technical glitches.
He advised INEC to thoroughly test all election equipment and ensure that staff and supplies reach polling units promptly.
Finally, Bamalli appealed to political actors to avoid hate speech.
