The FCT Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all primary and secondary school teachers across the Federal Capital Territory to begin an indefinite strike action starting Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
The union’s directive follows a decision by the State Executive Council (SEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Branch during its emergency review meeting on Tuesday evening.
The Council met to assess management’s response to a seven-day ultimatum it issued to the FCT Minister over critical welfare and administrative grievances.

Union leaders rejected the FCT Administration’s response, describing it as ambiguous and unsatisfactory.
The unresolved issues centre on three key demands: removing the vacancy clause as a prerequisite for teachers’ promotions, immediately conducting the 2025 promotion examinations for eligible staff, and reversing recent redeployments and demotions affecting school directors.

Following the deadlock, the SEC resolved that all workers across the territory must down tools indefinitely.
In an official notice issued to educators, the NUT FCT Wing State Secretary instructed teachers to remain at home and await further directives, adding that the council will issue an official communique and detailed press statement on Wednesday.
