A fire at an orphanage in a suburb of the Algerian capital, Algiers, has killed at least 11 people and injured 19 others, the country’s civil defence agency said on Thursday.
Emergency responders said firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze at the orphanage in the Mohammadia district of Algiers, while the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
Authorities described the death toll as provisional and did not provide the ages of the victims.

“The provisional toll is 11 dead,” it said, without specifying the age of the victims.
State television showed Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visiting those injured in the fire at a hospital.
The incident occurred as Algeria continues to experience a severe heatwave, with nearly 1,000 fires recorded across the country over the past week.
