Former Kogi Governor Idris Laid To Rest

The former Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris remains have been laid to rest at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja.

Idris, who died aged 77 in the United Kingdom (UK) on Sunday, was buried after his remains were returned to Nigeria.

The funeral was attended by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo and former governors Yahaya Bello and Idris Wada.

Members of the Idris family, government officials, political associates and other dignitaries also attended the burial.

Idris served as Kogi governor from 2003 to January 2012.

He returned to office after winning the March 2008 governorship re-run election.

The re-run followed a legal challenge to the 2007 governorship election.

Idris was succeeded by Captain Idris Wada in January 2012.

Following his death, Governor Ododo declared three days of mourning across Kogi State.

He also directed that the national and Kogi State flags be flown at half-mast at government offices and other public institutions.

Ododo announced that Idris would receive a state burial.

The Kogi State Government also took responsibility for the burial expenses and arrangements.

In a condolence letter to the Idris family, Ododo described his death as a major loss to Kogi State and Nigeria.

“His years in public office formed an important chapter in the political and developmental journey of Kogi State,” Ododo said.

The governor said Idris’ administration recorded interventions in infrastructure, education and healthcare.

He added that the projects contributed to the development and institutional growth of the state.

Ododo had earlier visited the late governor’s residence to condole with the Idris family.

Ibrahim Idris was born in 1949 in Idah, Kogi State. He began his early education in Onitsha, Anambra State, before completing his primary education in Kano.

He later attended King’s Commercial College in Buguma, Rivers State.

Idris obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Abuja.

He founded Ibro Trading Company, which had interests in construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality.
