Four people were injured on Thursday night after a petroleum tanker caught fire while discharging fuel at AYM Shafa Filling Station beside the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) office along Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Way in Area 3, Garki, Abuja.
The Federal Fire Service (FFS) said the tanker was carrying about 60,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
In a statement on Friday, Paul Abraham, National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services at FFS headquarters, said firefighters successfully contained the blaze following a coordinated emergency response.
The fire also affected part of the adjoining three-storey FCT-IRS building before firefighters brought it under control using multiple firefighting appliances, medium water jets and foam.
Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, who served as Incident Commander, personally coordinated the operation and remained at the scene until the early hours of Friday.
The four injured men were evacuated by a National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) ambulance to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and later discharged, according to the FFS. The service said an inspection of the scene confirmed that there was no further fire outbreak or additional casualty, adding that all responding personnel and equipment had safely returned to their stations.
The FFS thanked residents, motorists and other members of the public for cooperating with safety directives during the emergency operation.
It also commended the FCT Fire Service, NEMA, the Nigeria Police Force and other emergency agencies for supporting the response. The service said an investigation was ongoing to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the fire and prevent similar incidents.
The FFS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, property and critical national assets through prompt and coordinated emergency response.
