Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has signed a new five-year contract with the Premier League champions, extending his stay at the club until 2031, with the option of a further 12 months.
The Croatia international, whose previous contract was due to expire in 2028, has committed his future to City after speculation linked him with moves to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Gvardiol joined City from RB Leipzig in 2023 in a deal worth £77 million ($102 million) and has since made 122 appearances for the club. He played a key role in City’s 2024 Premier League title-winning campaign, featuring both at centre-back and left-back.
The 24-year-old returned to action in May after spending more than four months on the sidelines with a broken leg. He also represented Croatia during their World Cup campaign.
Speaking after signing the new deal, Gvardiol said he was eager to remain at the Etihad after learning of the club’s desire to extend his contract.
“As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted,” he said.
“The City fans have been unbelievable with me from day one, and the club provide absolutely everything for players. It’s the best club in the world to be at.”
Manchester City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, described Gvardiol as one of the world’s finest defenders and praised his professionalism and development.
“Josko is a player this club really believes in. He is young, an outstanding professional and already one of the best defenders in the world,” Viana said.
Gvardiol’s extension follows recent long-term contract renewals for Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov.
