South Korea’s heatwave has killed 16 people since May, with more than 2,000 others suffering heat-related illnesses, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.
Between May 15 and August 2, a total of 2,025 people were treated for heat-related conditions, including 16 deaths, according to ministry data.
The country’s temperature record has been broken three times in the past week, with the latest record reaching 42.5°C in Yangsan on Sunday.
Seoul was placed under the highest-level severe heatwave warning on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to approach 40°C.
The weather agency warned that extreme and potentially life-threatening heat was expected to continue.
