Hollywood actor George Clooney and his family have evacuated their home in southeastern France after a wildfire spread close to their property.

Clooney’s agent confirmed the development on Thursday, saying the actor informed the mayor of Brignoles, Didier Bremond, about the family’s evacuation in a personal letter.

Addressing the mayor as “Dear Didier,” Clooney said he and his wife, Amal Clooney, were unsure whether their home would survive the wildfire.

The actor added that despite leaving the area, his family would support the community in its recovery.

“Whatever happens to the community, we’ll be part of making it whole,” the letter said.

The wildfire broke out on Wednesday afternoon near Brignoles, about 90 kilometres east of Marseille, burning around 100 hectares of land, according to local authorities.

About 700 residents were evacuated as firefighters battled the blaze.

Officials said residents were allowed to return home on Thursday after the fire was brought under control.

However, water-bombing helicopters remained on standby as authorities warned that high temperatures and strong winds could increase the risk of the fire spreading again.

George and Amal Clooney bought the French estate in 2021 and have been living there with their twins, Ella and Alexander.

The family was granted French citizenship in December, and Clooney said in an interview last October that their farm in France had become their primary residence.
