A Moroccan court on Thursday slashed French-Moroccan rapper Maes’s seven-year prison sentence to one year on charges including attempted kidnapping and forming a criminal gang.

The Tangier Court of Appeal handed down the ruling, clearing the way for his immediate release after he spent nearly two years behind bars.

Authorities initially arrested Maes, whose real name is Walid Georgey, upon his arrival in Morocco in January 2025 after he fled the United Arab Emirates to evade potential extradition to France.

French officials had previously issued an international arrest warrant for the artist—who boasts over a billion views on YouTube—alleging he hired a gang and hitmen to murder a rival before law enforcement foiled the plot.
