Honduran Ex-President Returns Home

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández returned to Honduras on Sunday after US President Donald Trump pardoned him of a 45-year prison sentence for drug trafficking.

Arriving via private flight at Palmerola Airport near Tegucigalpa, the former conservative leader greeted supporters and family members who gathered to celebrate his release and offer public thanks to Trump.

Hernández, who led the Central American nation from 2014 to 2022, faced extradition to the United States shortly after leaving office and received a federal conviction in 2024 for aiding large-scale drug trafficking networks.

Trump issued the presidential pardon ahead of the country’s national elections while threatening to halt financial aid if conservative candidate Nasry Asfura lost the presidency—an intervention that provoked accusations of electoral interference and hypocrisy surrounding US counter-narcotics enforcement.

The former president now prepares for an August 3 court appearance in Honduras to face domestic corruption charges.

Hernández maintains his innocence against all allegations, asserting his return carries no immediate electoral ambitions, while Trump claims without evidence that US federal prosecutors fabricated the initial drug charges against him.
