Scaloni Reveals Messi Farewell Return Plan

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed how he convinced Lionel Messi to return to the national team for a farewell match after the forward announced his international retirement.

Scaloni said he believed Messi deserved a proper send-off from Argentina supporters and worked to persuade him to take part, with the backing of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) president.

Scaloni said Messi had been going through a difficult period but still wanted the opportunity to return and say goodbye to the fans. The Argentina coach said he encouraged Messi not to postpone the farewell, arguing the opportunity might not come again. Scaloni described the occasion as important for a player of Messi’s stature.

“I think a player like him deserves this. Personally, I did my part. We pushed for him to be able to play in this match,” Scaloni said. 

“We knew everything he was going through, but even so, he wanted to come and say goodbye to his people. I think if we’re going to pay tribute to him, it has to be now. 

“I engaged with him and endeavoured to persuade him that the present moment is optimal, as one cannot predict future developments. 

“The AFA and its president also fulfilled their responsibilities. This represents something truly meaningful, and he is deserving of it.”

Messi announced his retirement from international football after Argentina lost to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final. The defeat reportedly affected him deeply, and he took time to consider his decision while also mourning the death of his father.

Scaloni said the farewell match would let Messi officially say goodbye to Argentina supporters and give fans a chance to honour his contribution to the national team.
