Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Riliwan Disu, has held a high-level strategic meeting with stakeholders in Benue State, committing to intensified security measures across the region.
The engagement took place at the State Government Banquet Hall in Makurdi during an official visit to the Executive Governor, Rev. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.
The meeting convened key figures from the state, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, representatives of youths and women, and members of farmers’ associations, to discuss pressing security challenges, with particular focus on the enduring farmer-herder conflict.
Addressing the gathering, IGP Disu highlighted the proliferation of sophisticated firearms as a major factor driving recurring violence. He praised Governor Alia and community leaders for their proactive support, stressing that lasting peace requires active local cooperation.
The IGP urged residents, especially the youth, to report suspicious activities promptly, assuring them of robust, intelligence-driven policing and complete confidentiality for informants. He also emphasised the importance of coordination between conventional security agencies and local security outfits, noting that maintaining law and order is a shared responsibility.
Governor Alia welcomed the IGP’s visit, describing it as a demonstration of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment under his leadership. He reaffirmed the state government’s support for security agencies, stressing the need for a safe environment where citizens can live, work, and farm without fear.
The governor also commended the efforts of the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C. Nwadiogbu, for fostering stronger police-community relations and tackling crime decisively.
The Nigeria Police Force says it remains committed to protecting communities nationwide while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and public trust, reinforcing its role as a key pillar of stability in Benue State and beyond.
