An investigation into the train accident that occurred on Monday along the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor near Agbor in Delta State has commenced.
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi, in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to him, a total of 482 persons were on board the train, comprising 442 passengers, 40 crew members, security personnel, and third-party service providers.
Preliminary reports indicate that four coaches capsized while one coach derailed, resulting in the death of four passengers—two adult females, one adult male, and one infant.
No fewer than 24 passengers sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

Adebiyi added that a staff member of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) also sustained a traumatic limb injury and is in stable condition after receiving treatment.
The Ministry of Transportation and the NRC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. They also commended the swift response of the Delta State Government, emergency responders, security agencies, NRC rescue teams, medical personnel, and members of the public who assisted in rescue operations.
He further stated that the full passenger manifest has been retrieved and will be made available to relevant authorities upon request.
Adebiyi added that a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced, while efforts are ongoing to account for all passengers and provide support to those affected.
