At least three passengers were killed after a train operating on the Warri-Itakpe rail line derailed on Monday.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident, stating that emergency responders and relevant authorities have been deployed to the scene to assist affected passengers and assess the situation.
In a statement issued on Monday, NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, said the corporation was monitoring developments and coordinating response efforts.
He noted that rescue and support operations were ongoing, adding that further details would be released after more information becomes available.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms that an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) occurred today.
“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the statement read.
“The Corporation is closely monitoring developments and a detailed statement will be issued as soon as more information becomes available,” it added.

The incident comes less than a month after the NRC temporarily suspended operations on the Warri-Itakpe Train Service to carry out operational reviews and technical assessments to improve safety and service delivery.
At the time, the corporation said the suspension was necessary to enable engineers conduct critical evaluations and address operational concerns before normal services resumed.
The Warri-Itakpe route has recorded a number of derailment incidents in recent years.
In November 2025, the NRC attributed a derailment on the corridor to vandalism and later announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with the incident in Agbor, Delta State.
Another derailment occurred in August 2025 involving a passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna, causing panic among passengers shortly after departure from the Federal Capital Territory.
The recurring incidents prompted the Senate in November 2025 to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the causes of frequent train derailments and examine the condition of rail infrastructure and imported railway materials across the country.
