Israel has informed the United States that Iran has developed a fresh plan to assassinate President Donald Trump, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN.
The warning was conveyed to US officials this week, according to one source, while another said American intelligence had detected a persistent stream of threats against Trump in recent weeks.
The Israeli alert, however, was distinct in that it outlined a specific plot, the source said.
The precise nature of the plan remains unclear, as does whether US intelligence had independently identified the same threat prior to the Israeli communication.
The White House, when asked about the Israeli warning first reported by the Wall Street Journal, referred to Trump’s own remarks on Wednesday regarding Iran’s hostility toward him.

“I’m on whatever list. I saw this morning I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a bit lucky, but maybe that doesn’t last very long.
“These are evil, sick people. And we have to root out that cancer. That cancer. You know what you do? You’ve got to cut out cancer early. And that’s the way I feel.”

The revelation is a reaction to the escalating hostilities between Washington and Tehran, where a 60-day ceasefire broke down, and both sides are now exchanging threats and military strikes.
Despite the heightened rhetoric, a US official said diplomatic channels remained active behind the scenes, according to a CNN report.
Officials acknowledged that preparations for potential strikes had been made on Thursday night but were ultimately set aside in favour of continued dialogue.
