A bus crash has killed 24 people and injured 36 others after the vehicle plunged off a bridge into a river in western Ivory Coast.
The bus was travelling from the northern town of Odienne to Yamoussoukro, the country’s political capital, when it veered off the bridge and fell into the Bafing River on Monday.
The Transport Ministry said 69 people, including the crew, were on board at the time of the crash.
“The provisional toll stands at 24 dead and 36 injured, out of the 69 people on board, including the crew. Rescue teams are working flat out to find the missing victims,” the ministry said.
Deadly road accidents are common in Ivory Coast, with authorities blaming poor road conditions and the state of some vehicles for frequent crashes.
In July last year, 16 people were killed and 51 others injured after a truck and a bus collided in the northern part of the country.
The Transport Ministry says between 1,000 and 1,500 people die every year in road accidents across the Ivory Coast.
