A windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall in Jigawa State has killed three people and affected more than 5,000 residents.

The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hannafi Yakubu, disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday.

Yakubu said about 120 communities across 13 local government areas of the state were affected by the disaster.

He added that 47 public schools, three health facilities and two police stations also sustained damage.

According to him, the agency compiled the casualty and damage figures from incidents recorded since the onset of the rainy season.

The affected local government areas are Dutse, Gwaram, Birnin Kudu, Kiyawa, Babura, Gumel, Kaugama, Ringim, Gagarawa, Kirikasamma, Suletankarkar, Miga and Buji.

Yakubu said the state government had distributed relief materials to affected residents to ease their hardship.

He also appealed to philanthropists, wealthy individuals, corporate organisations and donor agencies to support the victims.

Yakubu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities through proactive emergency response initiatives.

“Disaster is for everyone, so all must assist to arrest the situation.

“SEMA, with support from the state government, is ready to assist victims whenever disaster strikes,” he said.
