The Kano State Police Command has impounded 81 vehicles operating with covered, defaced or missing number plates, warning that the affected owners and drivers will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this during a press briefing on Monday, describing the increasing use of such vehicles as a major security concern.

According to him, criminals often use vehicles with concealed or missing registration numbers to commit crimes and evade identification by security agencies.

“This is not a minor traffic offence. It is a deliberate attempt to create anonymity. Criminals use such vehicles to commit crimes and escape detection. We cannot and will not allow Kano State to become a safe haven for such activities,” Bakori said.

The police commissioner explained that the command carried out extensive public awareness campaigns through radio, television, social media and phone-in programmes before launching the enforcement exercise.

He said residents were repeatedly reminded of their responsibility to properly register their vehicles and ensure their number plates were clearly displayed.

Bakori also revealed that three additional vehicles were intercepted under suspicious circumstances during the operation after their occupants failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding their ownership and use.

He said the vehicles and their occupants are undergoing further investigation and assured that due legal process would be followed.

The commissioner stressed that the operation is aimed at improving public safety by ensuring that every vehicle on the road can be easily identified and traced, adding that the exercise is not intended to harass motorists.

He urged all vehicle owners to comply with the law by properly registering their vehicles and displaying standard, clearly visible number plates at all times.
